Not Sure What ‘Kombucha’ Is? Then Keep Reading

If you’ve heard about or seen Kombucha before, but are too afraid to try it-we get it. I mean everyone says it’s great for you, but then they also in the same breath tell you that there are living things in it, it can be a bit concerning.

So, we’re here to give you the down low on what it is, why you should drink it, and where you can find it. But first, it’s time for a short history lesson (bear with us!).

Kombucha is thought to have originated in Asia during the Chinese Tsin dynasty in 221 BC, where it was known commonly as the ‘Elixir of Life’ or the ‘Remedy for Immortality’ (so pretty great start right?).

Fast forward to today, Kombucha is drank all over the globe and is praised for being an all natural product with no added preservatives, colors, or artificial sweeteners.

So, now that we know where it is thought to originated from-let’s talk about what it actually is. Kombucha is a fermented tea-based probiotic drink. It is made from tea, sugar, and scoby- scoby being an acronym for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. Basically, the yeast and bacteria work together to create a certain type of ferment.

Kombucha is brewed over a course of seven to thirty-one days, once this process is over you are presented with a naturally carbonated and fizzy drink that you see in your stores today!

Let’s talk health benefits (because this is the main reason we cling to this drink, besides the fact that it tastes so good). Because Kombucha is fermented it contains probiotics, b-vitamins, and enzymes that are all tied to having beneficial effects on the body such as; improved digestion, increased energy, immune support (many people are drinking it now that cold season is upon us), weight loss, and cleansing or detox for the body.

It’s a great choice over coffee to give you a boost of energy during your mid-day slump!

After talking this up, I’m sure you’re dying to know where you can get this drink. Thankfully-it’s everywhere. Whole Foods, Trader Joes, health-food stores in general, and Amazon (seriously, you can just order a case from your couch and not even go to the store!) all sell Kombucha.

Long story short, in our opinion Kombucha tastes great. It’s not too sweet, it has that carbonation we all love in soda, and you get all of the health benefits added in there.

So, what are you waiting for? Try it out!
